Advancements in technology has radically changed life and lifestyle of the people today. The digital age has come inevitably that many of the traditional methods in life have been changed to meet the demands of the new age. Photography is one of the many media of visual communications that digitalization has penetrated. The transition from film photography to digital photography is significantly changing the landscape of photography. The brilliant innovation paved the way for the creation of digital SLR or the DSLR and other models of digital cameras. Advantages and disadvantages of these two types of photography can be discussed in terms of equipment, cost and processing (the short and long term of it) and quality of photos or outputs. However, the preference of the user will depend on the purpose of having a camera and the budget. - The initial cost of film camera is cheaper than a digi camera. - Since film cameras use film, you need to buy film constantly. This tends to incur expenses more on a regular basis than a digital SLR. Photos are not readily available for viewing. Once the film has been exhausted, processing requires a darkroom laboratory and chemicals to produce the photos or it has to be brought to a film processing center. Badly shot pictures would still be paid for. Film can get exposed too and this wastage is sometimes inevitable. Digital photography uses a memory card stores a lot of photos depending on its capacity. You just need to remove the memory card and upload the photos into the computer. You can view the pictures in less time and process. There is no risk of unnecessary wastage. Printing the photos is at your discretion, need and convenience.- Black and white photos are great with film photography while digital photography uses a camera that can be automatically or manually adjusted to capture real colors but black and white is an issue. Light is a concern for better output. This can be addressed by the digital camera properly unlike the film camera. Film photos come out the way they were shot. Digital photography allows photos to be edited or manipulated easily using the computer and applicable software. - The beauty of film photography is that it has a higher resolution, thus producing large prints better. Digital photography depends on the pixels that it comes with and it may affect the quality of large prints if beyond the capacity of the digital SLR camera. Choosing between the two is a matter of preference. Generally, comparing the cost over a period can help you decide. For convenience, many photography hobbyists and professionals now prefer the digital camera. In retrospect, the film photography had been carved in the hearts of many, especially in the aspect of precision documentation because their photos cannot, in any way, be edited. While the advantages of DSLR can outstrip the film camera, film photography will still be around for long. One cannot deny the fact that it has been around for centuries providing valuable memoirs.
