Stay stylish during pregnancy

The most important aesthetic tool for every pregnant woman is her wardrobe. If you carry on wearing the same old clothes then it wont be long before things begin to get a little strained. On the other hand, if youre at all fashion conscious then the idea of squeezing yourself into traditional maternity wear probably doesnt appeal.

Fortunately, this is a dilemma that has been fully appreciated and exploited by UK fashion designers. Youll find that the high street offers a wide range of maternity collections, so youre bound to find something that will fit your tastes. New Look, in particular, has a great selection of maternity clothes, so you can carry on looking good without spending a fortune.

When selecting your initial maternity wardrobe, the general rule is to follow your tastes. Start with a few classic items ? clothes that you know youll want to wear day in, day out for the next nine months and then accessorise with attractive extras. A good pair of jeans is always a must, and works really well with floaty tops and hip-skimming dresses for evening wear.

Remember, however great any maternity collection looks, theres no point in rushing out and buying your whole pregnancy wardrobe at once. You dont know how your body is going to change over nine months, and you dont want to end up with a closet full of unusable maternity wear before youve even had the baby. On the other hand, buying clothes big enough to grow into can make you feel frumpy and unattractive.

Of course, re-vamping your wardrobe is only a first step towards looking great while pregnant. Youll need to take care of your skin, too, if you want to retain that natural Im having a baby glow. Regular home facials are a good start, although make sure that all the products you use are suitable for pregnant women. You should also get plenty of extra sleep and drink as much water as you can to help prevent water retention.

Many pregnant women find themselves tempted to double their calorie intake, but remember that your baby only needs an extra 300-500 calories per day. Try to get this through nutritious food such as fruit, vegetables and pulses, rather than snacking on crisps and biscuits.
