A Few Handy Tips to Wash Baseball Caps

We tend to get attached to outfits that have been giving us comfort for sometime. Be it a pair of draw string pajamas, tracksuit, or a base ball cap. It has often been found that people are unwilling to clean their favorite baseball caps with a fear of losing the color or some other damage that may be caused to it while washing. For instance, the cap can lose its shape or shrink, the brim might get damaged and many more. But cleaning a dirty cap is essential, here are some tips that will help you do it safely. You can use a product called Hat Saver. It keeps dust particles off the cap for sometime.

But this is a short term remedy. However, it will give it a longer life. Before washing always check the material that the baseball cap is made of. The cap should also contain a tag that will have the manufacturer?s instructions about cleaning them. Baseball caps are generally made of cotton or polyester. These materials can withstand a good washing. Cotton twill, jersey mesh and cotton/polyester blends are used too to make caps. They are durable and bright fabric. Moreover, cotton/polyester blends have a good color fastness too. Woolen caps are also available, but wool can shrink in hot water or air. After you know what material the baseball cap is made of, check its color fastness. You can take a mild detergent on a wet cloth.

Rub it on an area in the cap that is not visible. Rinse the area with a clean cloth and water. If the color does not fade, the fabric is color fast. It has been a common notion that alcohol and hairspray are good stain removers. But these materials should never be used on baseball caps as they can do color damage. They also contain resins or lanolin sometimes that may create more stains.

Always clean with a brush that has soft bristles. Gently remove the dirt and dust so that they are not forced into the fabric. Clean the liner and headband with an enzyme-based laundry spray.

These days baseball caps have plastic bills rather than cardboards. So they can withstand a machine wash. Shove similar color clothes along with the cap into the machine put on the washer to wash it gently with cold or warm water. Don't ever apply bleach. To ensure that your baseball cap doesn?t loose its shape, you can use a plastic cage that will hold the cap secure against the washer's force.

Using dishwasher to clean baseball caps is not recommended. In a dishwasher the water gets very hot and the temperature cannot be fine-tuned. But if you use the top rack of the washer to wash the cap, it will not move and as a result its shape will remain intact. But always air-dry the cap, if you are using a dishwasher or washing machine. The hot air of clothes dryer or dishwasher may cause shrinkage.
