A realistic study for example will be very neutral and most people will like it but it does mean you ll have an object or a person to look at 24/7.

Alternatively if you look for a piece that is of a landscape then it can make your room feel actually more spacious and more pleasant to be in as a result – and again it s something that anyone can appreciate.

However, go with something more abstract, or even modern, and then it becomes something highly personal and subjective and these are the pieces that will likely say something about you, and about which you can have discussions and ponder their meaning. In many ways modern art can be more engaging by getting the viewer to do some work and apply some imagination, but this lack of accessibility can be alienating for some.

Finally, it s important to recognise that when you buy art you are making an important investment that you can feel secure in and that you should be able to sell to get your money back (and more) should the need ever arise.
