Sharing Is the Core of the Social Web
Sharing is the beginning of every social experience on the web. According to Rick Leibling, of the Taylor Group marketing agency, sharing is one of eight elements of social media behavior. Each time a different user mixes the elements in their own way, they find an entirely new outcome. Facebook, sharing and commenting will give you a different experience than Twitter, networking and blogging. Leibling's point is: the user is the main ingredient in the mix. He writes that the magic is in putting all the ingredients together and using them as it is convenient for each individual. As different tools become more popular and more user-friendly, the mix will change; making social media an ever shifting, ever growing force in the community.
Sharing begins all conversations online. Think about the most popular email conversations you have started with family members or co-workers. In many cases, you were sharing content in a news story, a funny comic or story that caught your eye or any number of other interesting online posts. Sharing is the best way to see what other people are talking about, what they think is good enough to send to family and friends and who they think are influencers on a certain topic. It monitors the pulse of what your family and friends think is interesting and influential.
Sharing is the central act to most social activity online. It allows us to distribute interesting and valuable information, interact with people and stay on top of what our friends are conversing about. It is the essence of the social web. There are other elements, including networking and real-time conversation, but sharing is one of ? if not the ? most important pieces when measuring social influence.
Now don't just sit there, start sharing with your family and friends! You are one of the biggest influencers in their lives. Consider this, they will always read the emails you send, but may delete newsletters or mass emails from people that the world would consider an influencer. Make yourself heard in your social circle. Do not sit idly by and watch as others share opinions with your inner circle, instead try to be a loud and influential voice. Stop simply reacting to the great links and posts that are sent your way; get the conversation going with interesting posts or stories that you find everyday.
