Magento Ecommerce - Designing And Building An Online Shop

Article Written By: John Gray

Add Your Picture I was almost in danger of missing the 21st century completely. The idea of having an online store seemed to be about as farfetched as being able to sit at home and let a C3P0 style robot look after my high street shop. I've run my little music shop for many years, and I know many of my customers very well now. As far as I was concerned, there was simply no reason to make things more difficult for myself.

I had been asked on several occasions whether I had an online store, particularly for sheet music and ordering items specially, and it was this that set me thinking that an online store wouldn't be a bad idea, and would certainly help me to reach a much wider market. I also came to realise that owning an online shop didn't mean having to build one from scratch, and discovered that there's plenty of support available on the web.

A friend of mine who owns a shop nearby recommended an online company they'd dealt with called Magento Central, and so I decided to take a deep breath and take the plunge. I was really rather nervous, and suspected that I may well find myself looking a bit of a fool with little idea of what to ask. However, after just a few minutes I found myself chatting to a very friendly lady who was not only very pleasant, but explained things so well even I could understand her!

They asked me a lot of questions about what I was looking for with my online shop, what my aims were, who my expected market was and about my current branding. These weren't the technical questions I was expecting, but questions about running a shop - which I was quite comfortable with. I sent them some information, and they checked my thoughts, reactions and comments at every stage. I must say as time progressed far from being anxious I was getting quite excited!

Eventually the day dawned when they told me that my online shop was ready. I was very excited, and typed in the address straight away. It was absolutely first rate, if I do say so myself. The whole thing looked very slick and professional, and was unmistakable as my brand. I found myself browsing the shop, and realised that it was so easy to use that if I enjoyed using it, so would my customers. But more important that just looking good, the online shop was safe and secure, and easy for me to maintain with just a few simple clicks.

Magento Central discussed with me another crucial aspect of running an online shop, and that's something called search engine optimisation. Clearly there's little point having the world's most fantastic musical instrument shop online (which I do!) if nobody can ever find it. Making sure that the search engines pick up on your online shop and display it prominently for people to find its crucial. It was comforting to know that throughout the entire development of my online store Magento Central had implemented the very latest methods for achieving this.

Although getting my online shop up and running felt like an amazing achievement, and for me it certainly was, that's not the end of it. Search engine optimisation (SEO) has to be an on-going process, otherwise there's precious little point having an online presence at all. It stands to reason that you have to constantly make your online presence known to the search engines, keeping it relevant and ensuring that people can find your site because it's clearly there at the top of the relevant search results. After all, building the most advanced car in the world won't get you from A to B unless you're prepared to drive it, and keep driving it.

Based on my experience with Magento Central I would recommend that if you're thinking of getting an online shop, sprucing up an existing online shop or making sure people can find your shop through the application of rock solid search engine optimisation, give them a call and discover how they could help your business take the next step.
