Email is a great option for traffic. You can use it a couple different ways. You can burn a feed with feedburner that will allow people to subscribe to your blog via email. This will let them read your posts in their own email. You can also start building a list of readers with an autoresponder. When someone subscribes to your list they give you permission to send them emails. This can be a quick teaser message about your latest post to get them to come to your blog.

Use subscription. An easy way to get your readers e-mail is to give them an opportunity to subscribe to your blog. Keep some exclusive information for your subscribers to entice readers to subscribe and give their e-mail address. Just be responsible in using their e-mail address, as the last thing you want is a comment on your blog that you are a spammer.

Use a poll. Understanding what your readers want is a big deal. If you are offering things your readers don't care about you will lose traffic. If however, you ask them what they want and then provide it for you, they will love you for it. They will also tell other people about it, which will give you some good links which means more traffic.

Are you in the network? The blog network that is. If you aren't you really should be. Joining a group of bloggers blogging in the same niche helps you keep up to date with what's going on. It also helps you build relationships with other bloggers which can lead to link swaps as well as recommendations on other blogs. This will build your authority in your niche as well as lead to more traffic.

RSS should be your best friend. It is a relatively new technology but it is growing by leaps and bounds. Your RSS feed allows your readers to grab your content and read it either on their desktop or in a reader. This makes your blog very convenient for your readers. You can also use your RSS feed to submit to RSS directories. This will get you more backlinks which equates to higher search engine rankings and more traffic.

Maintaining a relationship with your readers can seem complicated, but it really isn't. You just need to keep them in mind while you are blogging, and write what they want or need. The more you make your readers happy the more they will tell others about you, which leads to more traffic. It really is a win/win.
