When one thinks of concrete, they typically imagine a drab, gray floor. Warehouse stores, especially, are infamous for highlighting this stereotype and use it intentionally to imply a level of cost cutting by not putting down linoleum or other type of flooring.

On that same note, a concrete is a cost effective way to get an attractive floor in any establishment. Concrete overlays are becoming a more viable option in the home. The results will astound you and the cost of an engineered layer of concrete is similar to the price of tile.

As you know, millionaires have beautiful floors in their homes; this flooring is often made from marble. It is no secret that marble is beautiful, but it is also incredibly expensive. If your original goal was marble flooring, but cannot afford the costs, there are companies who can produce polymer resin and concrete mixtures; they mimic marble at an affordable price.

The polymer is used to help bind the overlay to the existing concrete; this changes the concrete's properties so that it is more flexible and does not fall victim to temperature and humidity changes in the home. Another property change is that the concrete can mimic marble in shine and color.

These overlays can be laid in various thicknesses, from a thin credit card width overlay to several inches thick, depending on the application. The concrete and polymer mixture stick incredibly well to the existing slab and are incredibly durable.

The reality is, even the floor at the warehouse store has a concrete overlay on top of the slab. That is what gives the concrete the shine that it has. Those floors stand up to years of abuse without any signs of wear. The overlay is also resistant to most chemicals, salt and UV exposure, making it perfect for even outdoor applications.

In modern homes, a new trend is arising; that trend is using a concrete overlay for countertops. Since concrete is strong and an overlay has the potential to mimic other materials; the end result is a durable countertop that looks expensive (but really isn't).

As for finial appearance, some homeowners keep the concrete look by staining and others use an overlay to get a marble or granite look. As you know, marble and granite make beautiful countertops, but neither have the strength and durability to standup to concrete. Most importantly, concrete is more resistant to odors and stains; making it the perfect choice for either your home's floors or countertops.
