Swimming Pool Maintenance Issues To Watch

Add Your Picture Having a swimming pool is a luxury that many people around the world enjoy. It can be a great way to cool off on a hot summers day, fun to relax with friends and have a bbq, and the perfect tool to exercise and stay in shape. It's no surprise that someone with a swimming pool is generally happier than a person without it.

But if you are one of the lucky people who have a pool at their house, you need to ensure that it's well maintained, by taking good care of it all year round. This can include obvious issues such as having a creepy crawly suck up any debris from the base and walls of the pool, cleaning out the filter so that it doesn't get blocked up with gunk, and putting a cover over the pool during the winter months when it is not being used.

On top of this, there area number of other swimming pool maintenance issues to consider, and keeping on top of these will keep your pool in optimal condition. So whether you want to swim laps and lose weight, entertain your mates, or just go for a quick dip to cool off at the end of a hard day, these tips will be useful.

Probably the most regular maintenance requirement is checking the pH level. This should be done a couple of times a week during peak season, as too high or too low can make the water unconfortable to swim in. And at levels well off 7.2 to 7.8 if can even be damaging to your health. Chlorine is most effective at these levels and will make sure any bacteria or algae is killed. High pH levels can also damage pool equipment so it's crucial to be on top of this at all times.

Calcium levels are also something that needs to be monitored. Too much calcium in the water can result in scale formation so getting a professional to come and test the pool water will ensure it's at ideal levels. You can also look to purchase 'Calcium Kill', a pool chemical that helps prevent corrosion of pool walls and surfaces. The ingredients are essentially magnesium supphate and will lower the calcium levels and increase salt cell life.

Leaks can also be a major problem with a swimming pool. In the summer, pools lose a large amount of water through evaporation so it can be hard to tell if you actually have a leak. To test for a leak you can get a bucket and fill it three quarters with water. Mark a line on the bucket at the water level and place it in the water for 3 or 4 days.

After this period check the levels. If the level in the bucket has gone down the same as the level in the pool, you can assume the drop is just due to evaporation. But if the bucket level is higher than the pool level, it is likely you have a leak. Call a pool maintenance professional and get them to look into it further.

Swimming is to be enjoyed, and to maximise your fun you want to have your water hole in the best shape possible!
