There are many great tips and innovative ideas that you can learn when it comes to painting your kitchen cabinets. If you want to save money and do the work yourself there is indeed a lot to be learnt. Painting kitchen cabinets is not rocket science although there are many great tips and innovative ideas that you can learn when it comes to painting your kitchen cabinets. If you want to save money and do the work yourself there is indeed a lot to be learnt.

There are certain procedures that should be followed in order to prepare your cabinets for painting. The most important point to remember when painting anything is the preparation that goes into rendering your surface to the stage prior to the top coat of paint. If the preparation is not done properly it will reflect in your finished painted project - sooner rather than later. No paint is cheap so do the right thing by yourself and the paint you buy and prepare your surface to be painted thoroughly.

Firstly clean your kitchen cabinets and surrounding framework thoroughly with Sugar Soap. After doing this effectively, following the directions on the bottle, your surface will be ready for sanding.

Select a piece of fine grit sandpaper. There are sanders available on the market today that will actually suck in your sanding dust. There are small and compact and absolutely brilliant for this sort of indoor work. This is a messy and sometimes tedious job but, it is necessary, for an overall next to perfect paint job. Place plastic drop sheets or old discarded bed linen on surfaces you want protected from any process involved in the preparation of the cabinets and surrounding framework. You may want to remove the cabinet doors to give you ease of access to the surrounds and you can even finish preparing and actually painting the cabinet doors in a garage or shed if you have one. Having said that please ensure that wherever you plan to paint out of doors make sure you choose a still day - you don't want wind blowing sanding dust everywhere. Also, please remember to mark, in pencil on the back, the actual position each cabinet door was removed from.

Once you are happy with the fine feel of the sanded surfaces, it is time to apply a paint primer. Primer is very important in providing a surface for the paint to adhere to. Depending on what color you plan on painting your cabinets and surrounds you can have a choice of tinted primers available to you. Please speak to a painting professional on the right primer/undercoats that would be suitable for your particular project. This is another step in the preparation process that you would be foolish to avoid.

Once you have primed or primed and undercoated the surfaces to be painted - you are ready to apply the top coat of paint but only after a very light sanding of the primer/undercoat. The top coat may need more than one coat of paint depending on what type of paint your top coat is. You can choose from enamel or a synthetic plastic paint. If you are after a really glossy finish you are going to have to buy enamel paint, and, with enamel paint comes turpentine. Discuss with your local painting professional, which brushes you should buy and these will be atypical as to the type of top coat you are going to apply. It seems a long winded tedious process but, once you have completed all your top coat painting and allow the paint adequate time to dry, you can re-hang your cabinet doors back on their framework, reapplying each door you have marked as to which door belongs on what cavity. You may even lash out and buy yourself some new door handles for your cabinet doors if you have them (handles) to compliment the amazing paint job and kitchen cabinet makeover.
