Why Proper Pool House Construction Demands Only Experienced Professionals

Article Written By: Kathryn Dawson

Add Your Picture It is understandable that a pool should need to be housed in climates that are undependable at best, and the advantage is the privacy and the beauty in which a person can find themselves swimming. Naturally, a pool house is the ideal venue, with the convenience of never straying far from the comforts of home and a near endless variety of styles to house the pool in.

Whether it is an orangery, a conservatory or a garden room that the pool is enclosed in, its surrounds can be as luxurious, contemporary and traditional as an individual desires. But there are added issues to be addressed that the overall design will be influenced by. It may be that traditional conservatories are preferred, but environmental control, humidity and cost efficiency may point to oak conservatories as the best option.

Housing a pool requires more than just a sound roof and walls. Unlike other extensions, which must deal with the effects of adverse weather conditions on their exterior, this structure must be protected from elements within. Ventilation and condensation can lead to structural damage, for example, and it has been known to rain inside because of condensation dripping from the glass roof.

Properly ventilating a pool enclosure is not as difficult or expensive a job as some might fear, but it is essential. Unless the pool itself is quite large, there is no need to worry about an intricate network of air ducts. All that is needed is a flow of air above the water to ensure that water vapour is allowed to escape. In some cases, this can be accomplished through a simple system of opened windows, though they would certainly need to be strategically positioned.

Of course, depending on the location of the pool enclosure, the problem could also extend to the main house if the enclosure is not sufficiently insulated to ensure the humidity from a warm pool is kept away from the main living areas.

The type of extension that the pool is housed in matters too. A typical conservatory, for example, is built with a considerable amount of glazing, which in turn can create much more condensation should ventilation be poor. This condensation can cause rusting, to the framework if it is metal and to implements in use. The moisture in the air can also affect other aspects of the structure.

These issues make it imperative that, even from the initial design stage, an experienced professional is consulted. Their advice can be invaluable, as they know what is necessary, and help to save money in the long run by avoiding expensive repairs and even rebuilding.

They may advise that roof vents be included within the structure to permit the water vapour to escape, while the inclusion of several large doors could also be recommended. These doors would allow fresh air to enter in abundance, and humidity levels to drop. Of course, that is fine in summer, but not in winter. A dehumidifier, therefore, installed in the pool enclosure can be highly effective.

A hardwood timber oak frame pool enclosure is the luxury and status choice. Where money is no issue, an oak framed pool house is the perfect choice to reflect the home owner's persona. Oak framed buildings offer style and elegance and are the perfect luxury to extend the home or house a pool.

A garden room can also be used as a pool enclosure, not just a conservatory. However, it faces the same issues over ventilation and humidity. There is generally a smaller glazed surface area but by installing sliding or bifold doors, ventilation is improved immediately option. Also, by installing vent windows in the roof, warm, damp air can also escape.

Unfortunately the emphasis must be on ventilation. This is not only because of the immediate damage that can be done, but also the long term effects on the health of those making use of the facility. But that does not mean that style is lost. Poor ventilation and environmental control will spoil the experience. Add to that the cost of repairs over time, and the wisdom in hiring those who know over those who are simply less expensive, becomes clear.
