Why my carpentry dad rules
Both my Dad and Step Dad are carpenters. My Dad isn't any more but still has the skills and still does carpentry at his home. My Step Dad runs a small carpentry business and recently completed most of the carpentry and some of the building work on my mother and his new house. It's in a beautiful area of the coast, just a mile from a long sandy beach that is quiet in the winter and not that busy in the summer. One aspect of this walk to the beach I remember is the fruit trees by the lane on the way. Everything about this area is so pretty and memorable, but like most places like this, I don't believe I would want to live there all the time, unless perhaps I was a carpenter seeking a quiet place to live and work.
When I last visited the house of my mother and stepfather the build was nearly complete. The upstairs had yet to be decorated but the plumbing and wiring were in place and the floors nearly fitted. Now all the work has been done I am really hoping to get out there to visit sometime at the end of the summer or early Autumn, because that is when you get really good weather, although a little cooler, and less holiday visitors.
The house is built to save on energy and water. Insulated with special bricks and the use of natural insulating material such as sand, the house is cheap to keep warm and harvests rainwater for some water uses around the house. The building components are good too, with a special central vacuum unit with tubing going around the house so when you need to do some house cleaning, you just plug in a hose to a hole in the wall and it automatically starts the central vacuum unit to rid the room of dust. Because there's no bulky vacuum cleaner to carry around when you are doing the house cleaning the job is much more convenient and easy to do.
Most of the furniture in the house is made by my step dad, including chairs, tables, bookcases and shelves. He uses traditional methods for carpentry although his power tools include some high quality professional equipment with a variety of high specification functions. His orbital sander he used for much of the woodwork, while he has a range of routers, planers and jointers for use on different projects he is doing - either for the house or for people who want to buy his work.
Hopefully I will visit them soon for a weekend or maybe a week, and just laze around on the beach and go for walks along the beautiful coast. It's such a quiet and relaxing place to get away to. I always am interested to look around the house at any new furnishings my stepfather has made, but I am not sure about helping him with his work, it usually makes more sense to enjoy relaxing on it.
