What are down lighters and what differences can they make in your house?

Article Written By: Glenn Tucker

Add Your Picture Downlighters in ceilings are a popular requirement in most flats and houses. They are also widely used in offices and commercial buildings and when they are fitted, the ceiling is required to be fire safe. A great advantage is that they give even, gentle, low shadow lighting in a room.

Downlighters work by fitting the main bulb in the ceiling and the housing is normally sealed to avoid the bulb acting as a chimney, when the bulb gets warm, air is drawn up into the void above the ceiling.

They can give you a variety of design and function options that mix well together with a variety of other lights such as lamps. Whether your main purpose is style or practicality, down lighters can always be the right choice for your home.

Firstly, it is a good idea to install down lighters in an area of your home that you use a lot. This might be the kitchen where you cook, the office where you work, or a garage where you work on certain projects. Adding down lighters in these rooms will add more brightness and help you with your daily tasks.

Light up your staircase and hallway with down lighters. These are areas in your home that probably do not have any other light fixture meaning comfort and safety will be provided. Treat yourself like a celebrity and install down lighters on your mirrors. This works especially well in bathrooms and dressing rooms as they add extra light and will make getting ready for nights out or work in the morning much easier.

If you have a family that you worry about when you're asleep, then downlighters are a great solution to lighting up the outside of your house if someone is going to break in. Not only will this give an added layer of extra safety to your house, but it will also light up your landscape and create a relaxed atmosphere outside your house at night. Down lighters look great in porches and patios as well. If you have friends and family round your house for the evening, they will light up your garden subtly and not bother your neighbours at the same time.

A fireplace is one of the most common focal points for conversations, relaxation and comfort. You can dress up this part of the room by adding down lighters to enhance your room and not add too much emphasis. However, if you're not too concerned about creating an extra formal appeal for home staging, you can make it family friendly by reflecting your personality. If you have a flat screened television mounted on your wall, add down lighters to the narrow space around the television which will provide extra light and emphasis.

Not only do downlighters look great in room but you can also place them inside your wardrobes and closets, or if you have family portraits place the down lighters above the photographs to draw the eye to them. There is really no limit on how and where to use down lighters, but one thing is for sure, they are very beneficial for every home.
