Tips to Use Color in Your Room

Article Written By: taamiv

When it comes to choose a color for your room, it is important to understand how different shades and colors contrast and harmonize with each other, if you want to give every room in your home a personality and style. It is important also to mention that the hundreds of shades you see in a paint chart genuinely have their roots in just three primary colors, i.e. red, blue and yellow.

Out of these three, three secondary colors come, i.e. violet, orange and green. It is important to have a knowledge of these primary and secondary colors because it enables one to understand the fact that how different shades contrast and complement each other in different situations.

If you are looking for a complementing scheme, look for a color you like the most and then select a shade from either side of it. Complementing scheme of the colors always comes from the same primary colors. So, they relatively produce a softer effect.

However, if you are looking for a contrasting scheme, select a color of your choice and then choose a color exactly opposite to it. You will notice that this coloring scheme produce a much stronger effect than the complementing scheme.

Following are given few color checkpoints for your help:

• To check whether the color you are choosing is a good choice or not, take a piece of board about 60 cm square (2 feet sq) and paint it with a color. You can also use four pieces of copy paper taped together and hang them on the wall for several days to check the effects.

• Don t paint tiny test squares as they will not help you a lot. Your color sample should be large enough to give you an accurate impression. It is not necessary that the color you like work well in the room. So this test is vital to understand whether the color and shade is too light or too dark or whether it complements with the furniture etc.

• You have to examine your color sample at different times of the day to have a better idea. To be more precise, you need to check the effect of sunlight upon it.

• Don t try this test using too many colors. At a time, only work with one color. Only in this way you can accurately gauge the effect of the color.

• Remember, it is easy to repaint the wall than re-paper it. So, you have to be very careful in your selection in order to avoid the problem in the future.

• There are few things in a room that creates blocks of color, such as curtains and carpets. It is important for you to pick up the right shades and colors for them that perfectly complement and contrast with your overall room color scheme.
