Improving the appearance of your bathroom with a new bathroom countertop is a relatively quick project once you have made a selection among the many possibilities that are available. Deciding on what type of bathroom countertop to install may take some time with all the many choices available.

What you select for a countertop depends on your needs, your budget, the degree of wear and usage the countertop will undergo, as well as your own taste and style.

Tile is the one option that will not be completed in a single day because of the steps needed to install it and the time each step requires to cure.

Ceramic tile is durable, and considering that this is a small project in terms of material needed, it can also be very cost effective especially if you watch for special sales that are often available when a line of tile is being closed out. Buying at a good price and installing the tile yourself will make for a very economical improvement to your bath.

Purchase a few extra tiles to have in reserve. They will be needed in case there is any breakage during installation, and will come in handy if something heavy is later dropped on the counter top. Since this is a hard material, it is subject to crack, if abused.

Solid surface counter top materials such as granite, natural marble and corian are often sought after as a choice for a bathroom countertop. These materials wear very well over the years, and will add additional value and appeal to a bath. Each has is own care requirements and following manufacturer suggestions in this area is necessary in maintaining them. Granite and natural marble for instance should never be cleaned with vinegar or general cleaning products.

Know the warranty requirements when you consider a purchase. Solid surface materials often require professional installation.

In the case of granite, a less costly options is granite tile which can be installed more easily, and done as a DIY project saving money both on the product and on the installation as well.

An easy and less costly solution to a new bathroom countertop is selecting a man-made material in one of the standard sizes offered at many home improvement centers. Laminate bathroom countertops as well as synthetic marble in various patterns and color options are available in a number of standard sizes, and some even have an integrated sink. Backspashes that coordinated may be sold separately or included depending on the material or offering.

One you have your countertop and are ready to install begin by shutting off the water, and disconnecting the plumbing.

Check to see how the old countertop was secured. Many times this is with screws from underneath. Also see if the backsplash was secured to the wall with grout so you will see the best way to remove the countertop and backsplash and eliminate damage to counter base and wall.

Position your new countertop checking to see that it is level from the front to back and also from side to side. You may or may not need to cut an opening for the sink, depending on the application.

Unless your existing faucet is in excellent shape, this is the time to update with a new one to get the most from this upgrade. Once you are done you can step back and see what an improvement your updated bathroom countertop makes in the overall appearance of your bath. I'm sure you will agree that this short one day update was well worth the time and money invested.
