If French elegance is second to none, so is the elegance of French doors. It is in a class of its own, so you just cannot compare or contrast it to something else. These huge glass doors connect the inside and outside of the home so perfectly that residents can visually breathe in the scent of the flowers in the garden. A French chateau, with its mansard roof, winding staircase, spires, chandeliers, and elaborate exterior French doors, has always been the embodiment of elegance and architectural perfection. The charms of these French symbols are so eternal that even today, many people prefer to have exterior French doors for their homes to have that touch of elegance.

Since old French homes had always been built with rippling land all around, the essential purpose of the doors was to keep the inhabitants well connected to the land and nature outside, through all its seasonal changes. While exterior French doors connect the landscape just around the house perfectly to the interior through its glass panels, it can even bring in the snow-capped mountains located at a distance. Glass, in all its beautiful incarnations, is at the core of the charm. Though wood or wrought iron frames the glass in different ways, the interference of other objects in these doors is limited. The framed glass pieces that form the units of these doors are known as lites.

Exterior French doors may be single or double, and can be of mahogany, knotty alder, oak, maple, or other woods. The glass panes, that are the most important part of French doors, may variously be single or dual, and may be clear glass, clear tempered glass, glass with beveled edges, frosted iron glass, or stained glass. Doors will be one lite, or half lite, where the glass is restricted to the top half. Safety laminated glass and tempered bevel glass is also used.

Single door and double doors with two full-length sidelites is a common pattern. As in the case of most other doors today, exterior doors are also designed to be doors with hinges, multifold doors that can be folded to one side, or bypass doors that slide across each other. The top of the glass may be straight or arched in both main doors and sidelites.

Double French doors that are broad and has in addition a sidelite on each side might occupy substantial portions of the wall. In addition, some could have huge arches above the door as well. Homes sporting large sized exterior French doors, with exceptionally beautiful handcrafted stained glass with lead came work or insulated brass, mix the past and the present in a beautiful perfection and turn the home royal. Every door fills, defines, and completes an opening. The only difference is in the way in which it is done.
