Do you have an open plan kitchen-dining area?

Article Written By: Glenn Tucker

Add Your Picture Open plan kitchen and dining areas create sociable, vibrant and relaxed atmosphere. They are an ideal space for eating and entertaining, while they can also be a place to cook and chat at the same time. Open plan kitchen and dining areas create a more spacious and light filled environment that makes you proud to call it home.

The kitchen is the heart of the home so creating an open plan kitchen/dining area will combine cooking, eating and living. Whether you incorporate a small breakfast bar or a twelve seated dining table, it is a space that will be used from breakfast time through to dessert.

Open plan kitchens and dining areas are a new and contemporary design. It is a unique and particular style as not all home owners would want to mix the dining area with their cooking area, but it does create an urban stylish look.

You must think carefully when deciding areas of space. For example, you don't want your guests in the way whilst you prepare the food for a meal but still you need to be able to socialise with them. Therefore, a kitchen island is a great way of separating the two, whilst hiding the preparation clutter such as pots and pans. It's also a good idea to put the eating area as close to natural light as possible.

If you live in a house with a great garden view take full advantage of this, and if you have some cash to splash, think about French doors to open up the dining area into the garden to really create a sense of open space. However don't worry if you live in a flat; just place your dining table next to a window.

If your open plan area are big enough to allow for a separate lounge, try to divide the space by creating a focal point around a fireplace or coffee table. If your space is limited, you could create an alcove. This is a great way to create privacy for things such as homework, reading or chatting on the phone. It is important to remember when you arrange your room and dining table make sure that guests are able to pull their chair back freely without hitting an obstacle.

Combining both areas means this open space will have constant passing traffic of friends and family. Therefore, it is essential to keep the area clean and safe, particularly if there are children around. The smell of your cooking will be delicious but not so great in other areas of the house. To prevent this from happening, you will need an effective extractor fan to ventilate the kitchen.

It also means you will have to sacrifice cupboard space. If you decide to fit in a kitchen island, add cupboards around the edges to put all your clutter and appliances in.

Lastly, it is important to use the light you have. Natural light is a great way to open up a room and create a happy atmosphere. Down lighters will look great over the dining table and in the kitchen, so it is easier to see when preparing food or eating it.
