Distributing Keys

Article Written By: kathybreneman09

Add Your Picture When you own a business or a block of flats, or any other building where many people come and go, you will be required to permit access to multiple people – either staff or residents – and to provide them each with their own key or set of keys so that they can come and go as they please.

However this of course poses a few security issues. For example, the fact that you have more keys means simply that there are more keys to go missing and you are more likely to find out that one of your staff or residents has lost a key. At the same time you might need to give them access to both their private quarters and the overall building without giving them access to everyone else's private areas. Then there's the fact that some people won't necessary be trustworthy and might try to keep copies of keys after they've been fired, or after they've left the business.

As such you need to find ways around the problem, to grant limited access while giving yourself more control. Here we'll look at a few of the options available from locksmiths to achieve just that.

Master keys involve clever craftsmanship on each of the lock mechanisms in order to allow one key to open all of them, as well as allowing all the individual keys to open each one but not the other. In other words each tenant can open their own door but not each others, while you will be able to open all of their doors with a single key. This is highly useful as it means you don't have to have a large rack of spare keys for if they get locked out, and because it means you can quickly enter any room if you need to.

Digital locks forego the normal mechanical locking systems and instead utilise an automatic lock controlled by swipe card, code or signal. This means that you don't need to copy lots of keys. If everyone has a PIN this means they simply need to remember their number and no one can lose this (as in they can forget it, but no one else can 'find it'). Meanwhile with a swipe card it will be very cheap and easy to make lots of copies. Should these go missing they can then be programmed to be removed from the system so that the whole lock doesn't need to be changed. Meanwhile other digital locks use biometric data – that being things like finger prints or retinal scans. This way the means to access can not be used by anyone not on the system, and nor can they be lost (at least not without serious injury).

DND Keys are 'Do Not Duplicate' keys which have been stamped with the 'Do Not Duplicate' request by the locksmith. This is a passive means by which to ensure that tenants or employees don't make copies of your keys without your permission ensuring you always know how many keys are in circulation. Most locksmiths will recognise this request and will not copy them.
