Five Ways to Prepare For Water Damage

Article Written By: David Hudson

Add Your Picture Dealing with the water issue in a prompt manner will have your water damage problem solved before it creates a mold monster that will take over your home. You come home from a long day at work to find not only that you need a new water tank, but you need galoshes to get into your basement! Water damage may be an uncommon occurrence, but here are five tips to preparing your home for the worst.

- Have an experienced Emergency Restoration company s phone number on hand. Try and find a company that is certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration (the IICRC). The IICRC requires member companies to provide proof of insurance, maintain a written complaint policy and provide education and training for certification. Even if the area affected is small, it is always a good idea to contact an Emergency Restoration company as mold can grow very easily on wet or damp areas.

It is also important to note that insurance companies don t have the authority to choose a restoration company for your home, you the homeowner do. Having the contact information of a professional restoration company on hand will ensure you will be prepared if an emergency situation ever arises.

- Keep rubber gloves, buckets, boots and masks on hand. This way if and when you have water damage you can quickly get rid of as much water as you can yourself. Paper towels and rags can also be used to dry up clean water” (such as that from a water tank or a dishwasher. Grey or black water (like seawater, river water or sewage water) should always be cleaned by a professional, as harmful contaminants can easily make you sick.

- Put keepsakes or important documents in a safe place. Photo albums, wedding pictures and any important documents can fit in a Tupperware container. If you can, keep all items up off the floor, especially where any water-holding device (such as dishwasher, washer or water tank) is located.

- Keep up on household chores. These include cleaning your gutters and downspouts, or any drains on your property; and replacing worn fittings or loose hose connections on household appliances that use water. This will lessen the chance of an accidental flood in or around your home.

- Use common sense. When you do have an actual flood in your home, make sure that you follow safety precautions. These include turning off electricity, and staying out of rooms that are wet and do not have the electricity turned off. It is also important to not not drink any water that may be contaminated.

Following these tips will make it easier to deal with the puddles in your basement.
