Bent Keys

Article Written By: kathybreneman09

Add Your Picture There are many reasons that people find themselves calling locksmiths and it's not just because they want to have a new lock put in necessarily. People call locksmiths because they are stuck outside, because they have broken their lock or their key, or just to consult about what lock to get.

Of all these reasons, a broken key is one of the most common ones and often we find ourselves stuck outside our property because the key we normally use is either snapped completely in half or just bent beyond all recognition. Either scenario is of course highly undesirable and there's not much we can do but to call the locksmith... or is there?

Fortunately before you call the locksmiths there are a few things you can try yourself, as well as a few ways to make sure that you don't end up in that situation in the first place. Here we will look at how to deal with a bent key.

One of the most common reasons for bent keys is that they have become twisted when you turned them in the lock. This occurs most commonly because they haven't been inserted all the way in (which sometimes is the fault of the lock). At this point when the individual twists the key, they then end up twisting the end while the other end remains static. This then of course results in a key that will never fit all the way in.

The best way to prevent this from happening then is to make sure that whenever you twist the key you insert it all the way in. If it hasn't gone all the way in, then don't try forcing it round. If it's too late for that, then you can twist the key back into shape by doing the opposite thing – simply put the key halfway in the lock again and then twist it back the other way so that it looks back to normal. This will enable you to then insert it all the way in (this might require a firm hand but not excessive force) and then carefully unlock the door.

Once you have done this your key will be working again and you will be inside meaning that there is no need to call the emergency locksmiths. However there is still a good reason to call a locksmith at some point and you shouldn't assume that the problem is solved at this point. Essentially, just because the key now works, doesn't mean it will stay that way. And if the key is twisted out of shape then you might not be able to use it soon again in future.

As such then you should call the locksmith or visit them as soon as possible in order to have the key copied while it is still in good shape – if you do not then you will need to have the whole lock changed. This is good advice in general and as soon as you notice any problem with the key you should take it to a locksmith.
