For sustainable garden designs, especially in drought prone places, you need to know the type of soil in your garden. Rocky places and sloppy landscapes are always dry since they can t hold much water. In hot places without large shades the soil also won't hold much water and so they make gardening a little bit hard. If you like doing gardening in green houses or inside, then you should not have any challenges, as long as you are watering it frequently.

There are a number of things that you will be required to do if need your garden to look good. Gardens without shade need to be watered regularly and sun resistant plants must be chosen. This all comes down to initial planning and knowledge of plants that are sun resistant.

On sloped areas, irrigation can also become a problem, due to run off. Water can simply run away on hard bare soil. Some garden designers may therefore install an underground water system to combat this.

You may need to treat plants with different fertilizers based on the kind of plants you choose. Using the wrong fertilizer in harsher conditions can make life even more difficult for many plants. Other options can be to create steps or barriers as part of your garden design, to minimize sloping areas.

Often due to water restriction watering can only be done early in the morning or late in the evening. It is important to spray the water rather than just pouring it, unless you direct water to the roots using a built in tube. Spray the water well over the leaves and branches until the soil underneath looks wet enough but don't make it water logged.

If your garden is experiencing a drought, you will just need to water it more regularly but if it is on a rocky ground, you need to do more than just watering. Finding special garden plants that can survive under severe weather conditions will be good for you. Succulents and native plants usually do best in rocky areas. Speak to your garden designer or nursery owner who will advise you on which plants may suit you best. You may also pour compost or other soil over the rocks but this will be rather expensive

over large areas.

Grass is a great tool for protecting soil in dry areas. It can help prevent soil erosion and the right varieties will aid in retaining water for the plants around your garden.Basically the grass can help slow evaporation and also trap water from running away.

The most important thing you need to remember is that gardens in different areas will suit different kinds of plants. It is also important to note that flooding your garden with water is not a solution. It often reduces soil quality, is expensive and in water restrictive areas, could get you fined. Let alone shunned by your neighbors.
