Keeping Fit in 2010: A Guide for the Gym-skeptic

Article Written By: katieb

Add Your Picture With spring coming round, you might need a incentive to get up and out in pursuit of a little exercise. It's difficult after a long winter to shake off that insular feeling, but not only can regular exercise help us get in shape for the new year, it can also help us to improve our state of mind, reduce stress and help us to cope with work problems in a new way. Perhaps you're like me, and you're a little averse to all things gym, or jogging, and such. In that case, take a look at some of these imaginative ways to get fit for summer in 2010:

Salsa Dancing: Throw on your best womens skirt and your dancing shoes and get down to a salsa course near you for some vigorous, vivacious salsa. Being one of the most popular types of dance course for people of all ages, there are hundreds of organizations and classes nationwide for salsa dancing. If you're a total beginner or you've torn up the floor in the past already, there's always a new level to try, always fun to be had.

Circus Groups: Run away and join the circus this spring and keep fit in new and entertaining ways. Especially around larger cities it's easy to find weekend or evening groups meeting up to juggle, practice unicycling, staff-skills, poi, wire acts and more, all of which will leave you good and tired after a long practice. What's more, circus skills demand accuracy, patience, and are therefore incredibly rewarding to learn.

Community Gardening Projects: There are few people who would say that a good few hours in the garden can't be called exercise, but what about when we've weeded and titivated our own patch as best we can? What about those who have no garden? Well, a community gardening project could solve a few problems all at once. Get together with some other selfless folk and, through the council, you can take on the task of providing colour and natural vibrancy to our streets, beautifying public places, volunteering to garden for the ill or the elderly; basically any one of a hundred ways to limber your sense of community spirit as well as your muscles.

Canoeing: Canoeing is a fantastic way to keep fit, and also gives us a view of England as we might have never seen it before. According to the BCU (British Canoe Union), there are over 4,500km in England that we can paddle on, for little more than £40 for a comprehensive license. You'd be surprised at just how many destinations there are to be explored, even without your own equipment. Take to the water this spring and enjoy exercise like you never imagined it could be.

Hiking: There's no better time than the spring for taking off and hiking your way to a better state of health. A good pair of shoes, some warm clothes and a few essentials are all you need. Regular hiking, perhaps a long route on the weekend, is ideal exercise for building stamina, strengthening muscles and generally improving your condition. It's hard work if you want it, but you're likely to see some incredible instances of natural beauty as you become familiar with the outdoors, and while you get fit, you also learn more about the natural environment around us.

Well, there are five tips for getting out and enjoying exercise this year, without the sweat-bands and back-braces. For courses, look no further than your public libraries or simply surf for a provider near you. For community ideas, just call up your local council and put it to them. Whatever you choose to do, it's the regular approach that builds routine and also allows you to see better results, so try to stick to keeping one or two nights or a weekend day free for your activity. Best of luck keeping fit in 2010. For all your outfits you can find just what your after by searching Clothes Online.
