Toric Contact Lenses Against Astigmatism

Article Written By: Cheryl Paine

Add Your Picture People troubled with vision defects like far and nearsightedness were immediately benefited with the availability of contact lenses. They were indeed a great innovation and improved the lives of millions of people but crucially ignored those who were afflicted with astigmatism. Regular lenses easily solved the problem of adjusting light rays to a certain point but failed to address the issue of scattered light rays.

Unable to correct astigmatism, contact lenses came as a boon to people affected with farsightedness in which, the light rays from the object go beyond the eye retina and shortsightedness in which, the light rays focus just before the retina. As the cornea is warped, the light falling on it gets speckled resulting in fuzzy vision which is not under the control of normal lenses.

Along came toric contact lenses to alter the situation and give relief to all those affected by astigmatism. Normal contacts work well for near and farsightedness but not for astigmatism because they are shaped like a sphere which is the shape of a normal cornea. When astigmatism occurs, the cornea resembles an egg so contact lenses are unable to fit properly on the eye. Toric lenses successfully combine shapes and leads to clearer vision for those with astigmatism. The shape of toric lenses differentiates toric lenses from others.

Its availability is in soft lens form and rigid gas permeable form. Those planning on wearing the lenses for a long time should opt for RGP lenses as these are more durable. Toric contact lenses remain in its place due to its weight towards the bottom while others fail to do so. Basically the lens should not move from its place as it causes confusion due to its blend of shapes.

Toric lenses can also be worn by people who have a combination of conditions such as astigmatism and nearsightedness. Make sure if you really suffer from severe astigmatism before buying toric contact lenses because they are very costly. Though distorted vision can be restored with toric lenses but it is not necessary to buy it if the problem is not so severe. The availability of toric lenses are in daily use form and disposable form.

If you choose disposable they need to be removed and thrown away like regular lenses. Those who elect to purchase daily wear toric contact lenses should carefully wash them in the special solution provided and store them away in a secure location. Till the invention of toric lenses astigmatism patients suffered lot of problems but after its arrival the sufferers were relieved to larger extent.
