Dealing with Diabetes and Depression

Article Written By: taamiv

Whenever you have any disease, let us talk about diabetes, it is always depressing to live with any disease. Lets us take an example of a woman who described her reaction when she found out her results for blood tolerance test: Everything but the diabetes just fell away. There was nothing in my life but that awful disease and the fact that I could actually die of it. It was totally consuming.

Depression has so many internal and external symptoms and it is necessary to know all these so that you will cope with your depression more effectively: lack of interest in appearance and diminished physical energy - sometimes to such an extent that a person ceases to function, crying unexpectedly and for no apparent reason, decreased or compulsive eating, diminished sex drive, sadness, boredom, and restlessness.

Although the best way to cope with your depression is by raising your mental strength and capabilities to fight your diabetes, you can also take help from therapist. Mostly people who are recently diagnosed with diabetes may find themselves stuck in the solitude for few days but later they learn to deal with their disease and eventually push off their depression. However, few suggestions are given below to cope with such feelings:

- Get yourself dressed properly every day, even if you don t have to go on work. Be in bright colorful dress may help you to come out of your gloomy depressed thoughts.

- Indulge yourself in some kind of activity. Gardening is the best option. Having greenery around you will definitely have a good impact on you and your behavior.

- Make exercise your habit and do exercise regularly. A long walk has a tendency to bring calmness in your thoughts.

- Don t sit in dark gloomy rooms. Always sit in a well lit area. Going out on sunny days especially in winter will be a great fun.

- Set goals for yourself. Keep yourself busy as much as possible to keep unwanted, depressed thoughts away from mind. It is better to keep your mind occupied by some external activity rather than sitting alone giving invitation to unpleasing thoughts.

- Always plan your activities beforehand. You can plan them with your family member or with friends so that you remain committed towards them.

- Look for things that depress you. Avoid doing such things in future. For instance, if you are reading a book which sounds awful to you, put it aside simply. Or never go for movies with a major theme of tragedy and so on.

- If you are unable to control your depression, the best way is to seek help from your therapist, physician or a psychiatrist.
