Safeguard Your Smile Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Mouth

Dental hygiene is one of the most important, but often neglected, aspects of your health. New research has linked poor dental hygiene to heart disease, low birth weight, and an array of health issues beyond gum disease and tooth loss. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to practice adequate dental hygiene and have a dental care routine in place.

The first step is to brush your teeth at least twice per day. Although manual toothbrushes still remove plaque and grime, electric powered toothbrushes are recommended by most dentists. It is recommended brushing your teeth for two to two and a half minutes per brushing. However, most people only brush an average of one to one and a half minutes.

In addition, many people brush too quickly and too harshly which can cause you to miss plaque deposits along the gum line as well as lead to gum recession. An electric toothbrush eliminates these problems as they include a timer that is set to the proper amount of time needed to brush your teeth. Once this timer goes off, the toothbrush will shut off as well. This feature ensures that you are brushing your teeth for the recommended time period. Furthermore, the rotating bristles are made to not rub the gums too hard while still brushing along the gum line where needed. Failure to brush your teeth can eventually lead to tooth loss, gum disease, infections and other secondary health problems.

In addition, flossing is a very important aspect to a healthy dental routine. It is important to floss daily to remove food and plaque from between the teeth. Plaque buildup between the teeth is also a major contributor to gum disease. Fluoride coated floss is better than standard wax as it can better grip in between the teeth and remove particles. Also, when flossing, make sure to move the floss back and forth two to three times between each tooth to ensure that all particles are removed. Your gums may bleed when you first begin a flossing regimen. However, keep flossing daily in between all teeth until the bleeding stops. This is a signal of healthy gums. Failure to floss regularly can lead to gum disease as well as tooth loss.

Mouthwashes and rinses are also a helpful tool for fighting cavities and preventing gum disease. Mouthwashes can help to remove particles from in-between the teeth, on the teeth, and on the tongue. However, rinses should not be used as a substitute for brushing or flossing. They are merely an aide. Although mouthwashes are not essential, they can help to eliminate bad breath and provide a cleaner mouth. If you do use a mouthwash, make sure to gargle prior to brushing.

Although there is a lot that you can do on your own to maintain proper oral hygiene, visiting a dentist in Chicago is still an important element for keeping a healthy mouth. It is recommended that you see the dentist twice a year for a cleaning and check up.

Prevention is the key to healthy oral hygiene. Proper brushing, flossing, and using mouthwashes will help you to avoid tooth loss, gum disease, gum recession, and other more serious illnesses. In addition, visiting your dentist regularly will help to ensure that you keep your pearly whites for years to come.
