There are also gum problems that can be addressed by cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic gum surgery can correct a smile that shows a significant portion of the gums, sometimes called gummy smile. These often require tissue reduction wherein the gums are repositioned and allowed to heal to achieve a beautiful new smile. Ageing can also give rise to gum problems such as receding gums or shrinking gums. This is common in adults over the age of 40 and is treated with bite adjustment, bite splint, or graft surgery for more advanced cases.
