A Guide To Some Of The Many Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Available Today

Add Your Picture There are many aspects of cosmetic dentistry. Teeth problems are very common and almost everyone has a trouble of some sort. The most basic treatment to get a better smile instantly is teeth whitening. Whether through ageing, staining, or chemical damage, the enamel covering the teeth can become discoloured. Some people can have naturally yellowish enamel, and this is often genetically predetermined. Teeth whitening is the best way to remove the yellow to brownish staining. The procedure is fairly simple, and most office treatments include bleaching with the use of ultraviolet light.

Usually, whitening results can be seen within an hour of treatment although full results can be achieved after a few days of treatment. The procedure is virtually painless but for some sensitive patients, over the counter anti inflammatory medications can help ease the discomfort. However, though it is a quick solution, teeth whitening do not give permanent results. Depending on personal oral hygiene, the results can last from one or a few more years.

Dental porcelain veneers are ideal for people with imperfect teeth. For people who do not have severe problems, veneers will help reshape the teeth, making them look straighter as well as whiter. The procedure typically requires two visits to the dentist. The first one is to create a mould depending on the fit and particular shade required. The next visit will be the application of the dental veneers. When the veneer is placed on the tooth, special cement is used for the bonding process. A light beam is then used to activate the chemicals in the cement for faster bonding to the tooth. Final adjustments are made and the procedure is done. The result is instantly whiter and straighter teeth.

Dentures or false teeth are the most common substitutes for missing teeth. These can be complete dentures or partial dentures, and both are removable teeth replacements. They are made of durable materials and can last from five to ten years. Dentures are made as natural and comfortable as possible. However, these may still require periods of adjustment. Speaking and chewing may feel different with dentures. Sometimes, these can cause sore spots on the gums and mouth because of compression. Since these are removable oral appliances, another concern is keeping them in place.

Dental implants have been a popular alternative for dentures. A dental implant provides better results because the titanium material is directly implanted into the jawbone and acts as the root of the tooth or teeth that have been lost. In time, the implant anchors securely on the jaw when the bone has grown around it. The implant can then hold an artificial crown or bridge just like natural teeth in place. A dental implant feels and functions much like a natural tooth, making no alteration in eating and talking. Cosmetic dental implants are very durable and can last a lifetime.

Braces or orthodontic devices can be applied for those with severe teeth misalignment problems. Metal braces are the most traditional orthodontic treatment to straighten the teeth. These are very strong and rarely break. However, these can be quite unattractive and some people dislike the metal mouth look. Modern cosmetic dentistry has come up with invisible braces to blend with the natural colour of the teeth. These are also more comfortable than metal braces and are less irritating to the gums. However, these can cost considerably more than traditional braces. Strength is also an issue because invisible braces are not as strong as metal ones.

There are also gum problems that can be addressed by cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic gum surgery can correct a smile that shows a significant portion of the gums, sometimes called gummy smile. These often require tissue reduction wherein the gums are repositioned and allowed to heal to achieve a beautiful new smile. Ageing can also give rise to gum problems such as receding gums or shrinking gums. This is common in adults over the age of 40 and is treated with bite adjustment, bite splint, or graft surgery for more advanced cases. The treatment of gum disease is also a part of cosmetic dentistry.

In the UK, cosmetic dentistry is a growing trend. The cosmetic dentistry UK options are numerous, addressing various oral concerns such as smile improvement, teeth problems, and gum problems.
