Dermabrasion works the best when the scar is still above the surface of the skin. For sunken or deeper scars it is less effective. The main warnings are as always, being put under general anesthetic is always something to be concerned with. It can be life-threatening and has risks involved.

Make sure you speak to more than one doctor when considering a procedure like this. Here the surface of the skin is literally sanded off. This will 'sand' off the appearance of scars or sun spots. It is very painful, and can take months to heal. But when all the pain is gone, then it can look quite good. If the scar is under the skin, then this process is less effective.

Microdermabrasion is the least intrusive procedure, but it is a medical procedure nonetheless. It is very popular and common in the Day Spa industry. In Microdermabrasion, the top surface layer of skin is removed by a lighter wand that sands the skin. The dead layer of skin is removed by a vacuum device that sucks the skin away.

As for creams that say they are specifically designed for stretch mark removal, just be aware of the outrageous claims. Ask them for before and after photographs of their last 30-50 clients. Ask for testimonials in writing.
