Article Written By: Randy T Slabey 25

Add Your Picture Throwing a party at your home or at a bring your own wine” restaurants? Would you not like to showoff by bringing wine that is really yours in all senses of the word? Would you not like to surprise your friends and relatives with your home made wine? Yes, it will be a real cool thing to bring your own home made wine. But the quality of the wine that you brew must be something that you should be able to boast about.

Making wine is an art in itself. People who make their wine at home do not do this just to save money but they enjoy making quality wine. However, home made wine certainly tastes different and it takes years of experience to prepare wine that is highly refined in taste like factory-made wine. Those who have made wine at home will know how important is the equipment that they use for making wine. The wine making equipment is as important as the quality of the ingredients used.

The wine making equipment is not a single-piece gadget like many other modern equipment that we own these days. The wine fermentation equipment has a number of essential items.

The first in the list is the primary fermentation container or barrel. The barrels must have a tight lid. It can also be a plastic bucket with a tight lid. The lid must have a hole with airlock to ensure that the carbon dioxide that is released during the fermentation process is not accumulated in the barrel or the primary fermentation container.

Secondly, you would need a carboy which is nothing but a glass container. You must find carboys that are not too big or too heavy so that it is easy to handle them during the whole process. The carboy should be fitted with fermentation lock.

If you would like a faster process then you must go for crushers and de-stemmers so that you do not have to manually separate the grapes from the stem.

You would also need a hydrometer to measure the sugar content and specific gravity of your wine. Winepress is another important piece of equipment that is essential for making wine at home.

Other miscellaneous items include siphons, tubes, and stoppers. Siphons and tubes are essential to separate the wine from the sediment during primary fermentation then to shift the wine to the secondary fermentation container followed by bottling. You will need stoppers when you store your wine in the bottles or other storage containers. These stoppers are made of hard rubber which cannot be corroded by the wine. These stoppers play a very vital role in the preparation of wine. The wine should be kept free from bacteria and the stopper helps in preventing bacteria from entering the containers.

Besides these you will also need a wine thief, wine paddle and a straining bag. The wine thief is used to take small amounts of wine from the container to test. Wine paddle is needed to stir the wine during the primary fermentation process and the straining bag is used to separate the sedimentation during the primary fermentation before transferring the wine to the secondary fermentation container.
