It seems that no matter where you look these days someone is selling a way to having a long life. They're selling it with vibration machines, silver solutions, massages with strange tools, beeping and blonking lights and always, always with big fees and high charges for books that promise the One True Secret for Living FOREVER. It appears that each and every seller is endorsed by a different professional organization, loved by a different celebrity and endowed with special powers from a different deity or Power of The Universe (POTU for short). None of them have been scientifically tested, so the only thing you can be sure that all the so-called cures will especially good at is racking up high fees and charges. You can find products that have been endorsed by a well-known organization, celebrity (or practically famous), or even supernatural entities.

Almost all of them are charlatans, though. Most know they're selling bunk, and the ones that believe it are just sad and deluded. Like those who buy their products, they mistake a few happy customers for real research, preferring to think they can see the world more clearly than the rest of us. They want these cures to work, and who wouldn't? But the difference between wanting and having isn't as fuzzy as the marketers would have you believe. The best advice you'll ever get is free: eat well. Almost every disease out there can be prevented, cured, or at least improved with a better diet. Most of us have terrible diets, filled with fats and chemicals, and even common sense says that will take a toll. Getting lots of green plants, fresh fruits, and whole grains is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

For example, are you aware of how many forms of cancer are lessened by a high fiber high plant food diet? I'm not sure of the exact number, but I am sure that it's a large percentage. Scientists have done research is caners as diverse as breast, lung, mouth, and bowel. All of them are affected by fiber, phytochemicals, antioxidants or poluphenols.

The only way to really get these research tested chemicals into your body? Diet. You can't take a pill, can't hold your face over a machine or drink a strange and expensive elixir (no matter what companies motivated by profit might tell you), you have to go right to the source and eat Kale, or Pomegranates or blueberries or oatmeal. The complexity of the interactions these compounds have with each other has not been fully studied, so it's impossible to distill them into something a andquot;natural food companyandquot; can sell at enormous markup in a pill form.

Even the research on soluble fiber and its effects on cholesterol and heart disease point to the need to take that substance in as a food, in oatmeal or cold cereal rather then taking a pill. This society has become very much a society of magical thinkers. Sometimes that magical thinking takes the form of religion, sometimes it takes the form of belief in homeopathy or andquot;natural food curesandquot;, and sometimes it takes the form of the belief that anything that is good can be compressed into a pill. It just isn't so. Sometimes the answer to a question is both as simple and as complex as eating good whole foods.
