Sea food is my weakness. They taste so good that you just cannot resist. I have heard a lot about South East Asian sea foods. Of course they are good and perhaps delicious as well. But let me tell you theirs is literally no place in the world other than Alaska for great seafood cuisine. And sea food lovers, including me, come from every corner of the globe to Alaska to have seafood. The preparation in this part of the world is pretty different from other parts and is damn tasty. It is really hard for me to stop bragging about how great Alaskan food is. To know about Alaskan food, you shall first visit the local seafood market or grocery stores. Talk to the vendors and inquire how they come up with seafood. There are various ways of extracting seafood from the sea. The process of extracting seafood from the sea is called harvesting methods. No methods in the world escape rules, regulations and guidelines. And Alaskan seafood harvesting is no exception. In fact, Alaskan Constitution (created in 1959) has laid down some clear policies regarding seafood industry and its execution. However, the purpose of these policies is only to protect the interests of local traders. Another main objective is to protect the entire ocean ecosystems in the coming years. The objective has been conceptualized in the wake of rising global warming and repeated sea disasters. Basically, there are two types of seafood that are extracted from the great waters of Alaska: whitefish and shellfish. The harvesting methods that are used to harvest whitefish include longline, trawl and pots. The method initiates with trawling and that happens when a vessel drags a large net behind it. The net can be either dragged along the ocean floor and mid-water range. Bottom trawling is however not recommended as it may make adverse impact on the ocean ecosystem. This is only allowed in some specific regions of the Alaskan waters. To make trawling a quick process, the administration has set up electronic sensors, which issues alerts in case a school of fish is in prime position for capture. After capturing, whitefish such as Alaska Pollock or Sole are processed onboard the vessel. The fishes may also be processed at nearest procession plant or floating processors. Longline fishing and pots are other common harvesting methods. Halibut is a rare whitefish that can only be caught using longline gear. The ships that are used to capture Halibut are relatively smaller in size and the entire process is inclusive of dropping fishing lines with baited hooks that are fixed with buoys. At times you may capture fishes that may not be your target. The accuracy can only be increased if one works on longline method. The method, however, requires a lot of lobor and at may cost you more bucks. Pots are used to capture Black Cod and Cod. They are large, steel framed cages, essentially packed with mesh netting. Baits are used to attract fishes in the spot, making sure that fishes do not spill over.
