How to cook Bulgur Wheat

Add Your Picture It is easy to learn how to cook bulgur wheat, one of the oldest grains known to mankind which is made from soaked and cooked whole wheat kernel, and this can be one of the dishes that you can easily prepare for your family members or friends. It can be used to make breads or in soups, salads as well as desserts.

Bulgur wheat can also be used as a thickener for dishes that have meat and also in some soups at the same time it is also a great extender. It is also used in some cases as an alternative to rice and has similar nutrients to the ones in whole wheat. It can also be prepared in a similar way as the one for preparing rice where it absorbs water that is twice its volume. Bulgur wheat can either be cooked or soaked in water for it to consume it. It comes in different types namely number 1, 2 ,3 and 4 and these will vary from the finest grind to the most-coarse grind where the finest grind will have a less cooking time.

Instead of using boiling water in preparing you can alternatively use boiling vegetable broth. The microwave can also be used for the finely ground bulgur where you should use a bowl to microwave safe bowl to mix the same amount of bulgur and water where they should be stirred thoroughly and then covered to cook for 2 minutes in high temperatures. There are various recipes available for cooking bulgur wheat and one of these is the Tabouli recipe.

With this recipe you will need several ingredients including:

1 cup dry Bulgur wheat

1 1/2 a cup of boiling water

1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon dried mint

1 heaping teaspoon crushed fresh garlic,

1 1/2 teaspoon salt and

a 1/4 cup of olive oil.

You will also need:

fresh black pepper, 1 chopped green pepper, 1/2 cup cooked chick peas, 1 cup fresh chopped parsley, 2 medium diced tomatoes, 1 chopped cucumber, 1/2 cup of chopped scallions including the green parts as well as 1/2 cup coarsely grated carrot.

After collecting all these ingredients you should start with the several steps of preparing bulgur wheat.

You should start with mixing the bulgur wheat, salt as well as the boiling water in a large bowl. Follow this by covering the bowl as well as the wheat soak for approx 20 minutes. This should then be followed by adding olive oil, mint, lemon juice as well as garlic. This mixture is supposed to be thoroughly mixed and thereafter placed in the refrigerator for 3 hours or overnight.

Refrigerating this mixture will make it ready for serving and this can be done with black pepper and vegetables. The dish can also be garnished using feta cheese and black olives. This recipe can be included in your everyday guide of meals.
