Over time, electrical and gas infrastructures were built across the country and new inventions were being perfected. Traditional kitchens changed. Stoves, originally using wood and coal as fuel, were now being manufactured to run on electricity or gas. Ice boxes became today's energy efficient electric refrigerators. Automatic dishwashers and microwave ovens were invented and eventually put into widespread use.

Decorating the home is important for the 21st century homeowner and it is no less important in modern kitchens. Wall coverings, wallpapers, tiles, cabinet styles, furniture and wall hangings help make the beautifully decorated kitchen attainable on any budget and for any decor.

As electricity and natural gas became more common, electric and gas stoves became the norm. Newer cooking technologies such as convection and microwave ovens offer cooking speed while using less energy. Refrigeration has grown from literally using ice to the modern refrigerator designs that make ice, pour drinks and do more using less power. Currently, updating or remodeling a traditional kitchen is one of the most popular home improvement projects being done. Homeowners expect more from their kitchens than just a place to cook. By updating the look of their kitchen, replacing older appliances with new and installing modern storage and cabinetry, homeowners not only add function, warmth and style to their homes, these updates may also increase its value.

Modern kitchen appliances no longer resemble their predecessors. Early stoves were heavy, large and fueled by wood. Coal and kerosene cook stoves were next developed and, as the nation's infrastructures grew, the first electric and gas stoves were advanced. Today's ovens and stoves are more compact and use less energy than earlier versions. There are also more recent technologies such as convection and microwave ovens that decrease cooking times, thereby using less power.

Home construction and design has changed. In the past, the traditional kitchen was thought of as a work room - cabinets, sink and appliances were often squeezed into a small room. Present-day homes are built with the kitchen as, if not the main focal point of the home, one of the main focal points. Family members and friends cook together more than before and require additional work areas, such as additional counter tops and islands. Spacious, well designed modern kitchens are routinely being built in to today's new homes, adding value, convenience and comfort.
