Planning a family holiday: Travel insurance

Travelling can be an expensive business, but it is unavoidable in some lines of work. Thankfully, there are a number of steps that you can take to keep your travelling costs low, thus making your travails more profitable from a personal point of view. Here are just a few:

Keep your luggage fees to a minimum. Airlines make a lot of money by charging their customers extra to put luggage in the hold. If you cannot get around with just a bag of hand luggage, then it can pay to build up status points with an airline in order to get luggage discounts. Another way around it is simply to travel with airlines that do not charge for luggage wherever possible.

Book ahead. Flights tend to be a lot cheaper if you book in advance, so if you have a fixed travel itinerary, take advantage of this fact by booking online as far ahead of the travel date as possible.

Cook your own. Save money on expensive cafes and restaurants by staying in self service apartments. By cooking your own food, you can eat well and save money too, which is great news if you have a fixed meal allowance, as you can keep the money you save for more important things.

Use Public Transport. Although you may not be able to do this in more remote areas, most major cities have fairly reliable public transport systems. Getting the subway or the bus is a lot cheaper than getting a taxi or using a hire car, and can definitely help you get more of a feel for the place you are visiting.

Keep your internet costs low. The Wi-Fi services in airports can be very handy, as you can catch up with all your correspondence while waiting for your flight, but it can be expensive if you rent it by the hour. If you travel by air a lot, getting yourself a monthly Wi-Fi subscription can save you a lot of cash. Also, take advantage of any free internet services that are available from hotels and public libraries, as these tend to be both quick and reliable.

Park your own car. You might feel like a big shot having a man in a nice suit and hat park your car at a hotel or restaurant, but if it is you that is footing the bill, then there are many better ways to spend your money than on valet parking.

Get the smaller hire car. Most car hire centres will offer you a mid sized car as the default option, but if you opt to go for their smallest car, you can save a heap of money, and you might even get a free upgrade if they have run out of the small ones.
