The internet has revolutionised the way that we shop for things. Everything from books to van insurance can be found online and usually at some pretty good prices. When it comes to buying something its not simply a case of starting and finishing with the nearest comparison website.

Everybody has heard of comparison websites, they have have become incredibly popular over the last decade. Unfortunately, now their success is coming back to haunt them as a number of insurance companies have removed their policies from these websites (and are acting accordingly). Its a fallacy that comparison websites search the whole internet, they dont, and therefore theyre not definitely finding you the best deal. The reason for this is simple, comparison websites dont cover the whole market anymore, companies have removed their products and long since offered different discounts of their own to people who go direct. Further, some comparison websites make their money from commission, and that money often comes out of the policy fees that you end up paying.

So what is the best way to use a comparison website? The first thing that you should do is make a search as normal, input as many details as possible ? you want to see the policies that offer you the cover you need, not just cheap ones that wont really protect you for that much. Once youve found the cheapest deals, look at the websites of those companies directly, dont go through any links attached to the comparison website, as you may end up looking at a slightly different set of policies.

The next thing to do is evaluate which companies offer the best extras. This isnt always easy, its not just a case of looking at the price but working out what you need, and what investments are worth it. Things to really look for are price guarantees, the companies work on the fact that you wont search for a better deal, but if you keep your eyes peeled and feel that youve made a mistake, this can save your skin. If you dont find better deals than those on the comparison website, then don't immediately start worrying. Some comparison websites have specific deals with specific insurers to offer deals only through their website, this means you can get a better deal than you can with the company directly. It's strange, but if the policy gives you the cover you need, at the best price, there is no point turning it down.

If you have found a company that you like, with a great policy and an online discount, its always worth giving them a call and seeing if you can negotiate things down directly. After all, if they are prepared to offer the same policy online at a discount, why not over the phone?
