When I was a child growing up in an extended joint family in the heartland of Texas, life seemed so much more innocent and easier than how it is right now. I was brought up with a bevy of cousins, each one of us growing up into best friends, taking care of each other and helping each other out. It was the best of times, considering all of us felt totally secured in each other's company, not to mention so many guardians taking care of us, not only from our own family but also from the neighbourhood. We all had our collective space and our respective individual spaces, and childhood was fun with loads of games, fights, laughs and togetherness. The times, alas, have changed now. When I see my little baby growing up all by himself, without any extended family as a support system, I feel sorry for him and for myself. And while there is a nanny to take care of the baby, there always is a doubt on how the baby is being treated. Which is why when my husband recommended installing a cctv security system at home, while I was first not very comfortable about it, I soon realized how it can help smoothen my life. Although I had this uneasy feeling about almost being a part of the sets of the popular television series Big Brother very much at my own home, I still realized that the merits of cctv far outnumbered the demerits. So despite my initial fears, I told my husband to go ahead and get the people to install cctv at home. I had thought they would completely turn around the place and that the entire process of installing the cctv system would be a long drawn process, it turned out to be a surprisingly not very complicated process. The team came in the morning, and before the baby could get up after his daily afternoon siesta, the cctv system was up and running, capturing the goings on in every nook and corner of my house. Of course, my husband's den got kind of converted into a control room of sorts, with the activities around the house getting monitored and displayed on the desktop computer, but what completely took me by surprise was that not only could we watch the happenings of house from the den, but the entire cctv coverage could also be seen from our respective office computers! This was a revelation because I had thought that the cctv would just record the stuff and we would have to check things out later through playback. But there was more in store for me! I could actually access all being covered by the cctv system at home from my mobile phone. This was totally unexpected, and a wonderful surprise. Thank you, technology! While my baby sure is missing growing up with a large family, the good news is that he has both his folks around with him. Always.
