Networks: A Vulnerable Concept

Article Written By: Sachin Kumar Airan

Add Your Picture If a network has access to the outside world then it becomes vulnerable and there is absolutely no way to secure it against all threats, but it can be secured against some of them, and you can at the very least make it incredibly difficult for hackers to gain access. You might be trying to stop the release of personal information, or you might be attempting to keep others from gaining access to your internet connection. Either way you have a long and tricky road ahead if you want to create a secure WiFi network.

In some cases setting up a basic router and firewall may be enough, but if you happening be running your WiFi network at corporation or even a government installation, you're going to need something a bit more substantial than your basic WEP security. You will in fact need to seek out something that can test your system for vulnerabilities and even assist you in closing the gaps, so to say.

After your network is sufficiently scanned for vulnerabilities you will need to take measures to protect those vulnerable spots. The best thing you can do is find a device that will provide you with anti-spam and anti-virus filters, along with an active web proxy. Intrusion prevention and content filtering will also go a long way in ensuring that your system is protected against the outside world.

Individuals aren't all you have to worry about when it comes to computer security. You need to be concerned with malware, spyware, and other forms of intrusive software. Not only will these cause a breach in security, they will also serve to slow down your network, and in the end this is can be incredibly irritating. Not only does it affect the overall user experience, it will also corrupt your machines to the point where they need a full scale reformat.

As you can see, protection should be at the top of anyone's list, though it will definitely be an expensive endeavor. No matter how much it costs to secure your network however, you can be assured that it will cost you much more in the long run if you do not take the necessary precautions in the first place. It may cost you users, it may cost you money, and it may even cost you the integrity of your network. Either way, you stand to lose something, and you truly do not have to!

Start searching for both hardware and software that will keep you protected against outside attacks as well as those that come from the inside. Computer networks are vulnerable by natures, but you don't have to settle for mediocrity when it comes to your security. It all starts with a single internet search!
