Today's newspapers are filled with stories of homes that are broken into or home invasions that have occurred because people have been caught offguard. And though most such incidents occur in high crime areas in cities, it is becoming more and more the case that suburban areas are fertile ground for such activities. Exterior and interior security cameras, though, can help give the homeowner the edge.
Home security cameras as a part of overall home security can make sense in certain circumstances, especially when the need for such cameras is due to a home being located in a area that may make the home's owners nervous or just as a matter of course when a homeowner desires a higher level of security. A home camera system, though, can help improve home security greatly in just about every case.
When it comes to home security cameras, the first thing a person should do is go online and check the Internet for various systems and what they can and cannot do. Basic home systems can start for well under $100, though such a system might be very basic and its camera and monitor setup might not be latest-generation, which is something most home security experts recommend having. When it comes to where cameras should be placed around the home, the question is answered by determining what is needed to be seen outside and where in addition to any cameras that are placed about the interior. Usually, it's smart to locate a camera around the front door and backdoor, they can sure that both give a full view of both front and rear areas. Also, take a look at the sides of the home and determine if cameras on both sides may make sense. They usually do in cases where there are basement windows or windows that can be entered from the ground floor. Burglars or those with bad intent tend to look for the easiest way in and out of a home. Cameras are placed at the egress and ingress points and they are hooked up to a monitor and digital video recorder for evidence should an event occur. For the most part, security experts advise that those who have home security as their top priority also incorporate burglar alarms or intruder alarms into a seamless system that works with cameras and other devices. It is helpful to think of home security as a series of rings or circles. This is normally called a "defense in depth" and is widely used in the military. At the outer edge of the defense, floodlights or spotlights that come on or turn off through use of motion sensors and the like can make a lot of sense, as do lights that turn on and turn off at dusk and dawn. These lights should be placed so that they overlap there beans and eliminate any dark spots or patches. Lights work well with security cameras, which are the next level in the defense system.Lastly, cameras are bolstered by a home intruder system that's been integrated with home security cameras to not only allow a homeowner to see who's trying to enter but also will send out a warning to the authorities at an off-site facility. Additionally, such systems (cameras, floodlights, alarms) should be hooked to an uninterruptible power supply. If done properly, the home will be completely protected.Author: Mike Ward is a technical advisor for Protection Depot, a leading online provider of security cameras and digital video recorders.
