Closed circuit television refers to a surveillance technology used for monitoring various locations and activities. The CCTV systems use cameras to send signals and video footage to a designated monitor, which can be a simple black and white television, desktop computer, or laptop computer. These cameras are operated from a central control room, where the video images can be monitored live or stored for viewing at a later date. In addition to fighting crime, modern CCTV systems can perform a wide range of functions from image enhancements for the visually impaired to broadcasts of pay-per-view sports events. CCTV has many scientific (medical) capacities, including medical imaging, microscopy, and robotics. Other commonly used forms of CCTV are live video presentations used for special events, such as, concerts, sports events, conventions, and interactive teleconferences. It play a major role in the field of law enforcement and continue to "take a bite out of crime". In addition to preventing, detecting, and even solving some crimes, they have been extended to assist law enforcement in civil matters as well. Speed cameras have been installed to monitor traffic violations, as well as traffic congestion, littering, and loitering. With the rise of violence in schools, incidents of public shootings, and the ongoing threat of future terrorist attacks, the use of CCTV systems by all levels of government is significant. Surveillance cameras are used to heighten security in government buildings, airports, military installations, subway stations, hospitals, schools, and numerous other public facilities for enhanced security and public safety. It is agreed universally by experts and laymen that the incidences of theft and vandalism are reduced by the mere presence of CCTV systems. Persons with criminal intent realize that they are more likely to be apprehended if there is a camera watching and recording their actions. To take advantage of this affordable and practical technology, many homeowners are installing cameras in their homes for added security for their families. The majority of the general public views the use of the systems positively. There are a some critics that point out the loss of privacy of persons under surveillance, as wells as the negative impact of surveillance on civil liberties. That argument is flawed. Why? Because CCTV cameras are usually for surveillance of "public" spaces, not private.
