An American by the name of Edward Holmes patented the first electro-mechanical burglar alarm in 1852. It was very uncomplex in nature, but well-received by the general public. There is the main control unit, or the brain of the system, a detection device, and the sounder or siren. Different triggers that a detection device can sense are heat, motion, shock, noise, vibration, and smoke (if the unit also doubles as a smoke detector). Depending on what type of detection device is installed, the trigger will alert the control unit, the data will be quickly analyzed, and then the siren will be sounded, if necessary.

A wireless burglar system is relatively easy to install, and doesn't require a specialist. Every component of the wireless system contains a radio transmitter/receiver which allows the detection device to communicate with the control unit. With this setup there are no worries about running wire, the parts can be placed just about anywhere, and it is easy to add onto the system or move it around.

Some people who want a burglar alarm choose to have a professional company install a monitored home security system. This protects the home 24 hours a day, and gives the homeowner peace of mind when away from home. In this system, when the detection device is triggered not only does an alarm sound, but the agency in charge of monitoring that system is alerted. The monitoring company also maintains the system to ensure it stays fully operable, so there is little the homeowner needs to do as far as maintenance.

Probably the easiest burglar alarm to install without a professional is a magnetic switch. They are used on doors and windows. There are two parts: the magnet and the switch. When properly installed, the magnet and switch line up on the door or window. When the connection between the two is broken (the door is opened, for example), the alarm sounds. When they are reconnected though, the alarm usually stops.

People get burglar alarms for many reasons, and they are not only restricted to the wealthy and business owners. Not only do they protect your valuable possessions, but they protect your family as well, as not all burglars are after money. Home security systems are also quite affordable and different systems have different benefits.

Choosing the right burglar alarm is important. Things to consider are: how much money you have available to invest in a system, can you install it yourself, or do you need a professional to do the installation, and why you need the system. All these considerations play a key role in choosing the right alarm system. The most important thing is to do your research before you decide so you will be completely satisfied with your choice.
