History about Border Collies

Article Written By: CamilleGoldin

Add Your Picture Border Collies came from a long line of droving dog breeds that were use to herd livestock from one place to another. They often cover large distances, droving cattle and sheep while shepherds were on horseback; it s also popularly called as being on the hoof. The name Border Collie came from the place where the dog was originally bred, which is in the borders of Scotland and England.

The term collie is used by the English meaning useful, which is the case with this hard working dog. James Reid, Secretary of the International Sheepdog Society, was the first to call this breed the Border Collie, in 1915.

The most popular Border Collie lineage came from the dog called Old Hemp who was born in 1893. He was a black and tan, sturdy dog bred by Adam Tefler during the turn of the century. Hemp was calm yet powerful that the sheep followed him effectively. His style was characterized by being quiet, head-down and looking at the herd with a strong eye, instead of barking and nipping like other sheepdogs. He was also used for stud service by many dog breeders that his genes and work characteristics became common among modern border collies.

Breeding the border collie was less concerned with pedigree but more concerned with the dogs ability in farming, herding and combating the harsh conditions in the Anglo-Scottish borders. It did not matter what the dog looked like as long as it was great at working with the sheep. Informal sheepdog competitions were held among farmers and herders to boast their dog s abilities. The first formal sheepdog trial was held in Bala, Wales in 1873. The best dogs were selected for breeding, twenty years later Adam Tefler was able to breed Meg, a black, strong-eyed dog with Roy, a black and tan dog, producing Old Hemp who was called the founding sire” of all border collies.

Another notable Border Collie is Winston Cap, or Cap who was born in 1963. Even as a young pup he showed signs of greatness, being able to work in the farm as early as six months old. By the time he was ten months old he won his first sheepdog trial and before he was to years old, Cap became the International Champion. He became very popular and became the stud of choice very much like Hemp. Cap s lineage was remarkable as his three sons and two grandsons won the Supreme Championship throughout the years. With this Cap s herding pose became the image of the Border Collie badge used by the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS).

Throughout history, Border Collies have proven to be sturdy, hardworking, intelligent and loyal dogs. They are great with children and also make for ideal guard and companion dogs. These characteristics are still present today, however not only are they fit for farm life but they can also make great pets as they are also affectionate and fun loving.
