A Little Pet Care Can Go A Long Way

Article Written By: temerity

Add Your Picture The role of a pet in a persons live cannot be underestimated. They provide love and enjoyment for people of all ages and are great companionship for elderly people. Older people living alone can live several years longer if they own a cat or a dog. Pets are a stress release, a friend, and even a fitness partner in some cases!

So with these animals playing such an important part in our lives, we need to ensure that their needs are also taken care of, both in terms of attention and care. Look after your pet and they will in return look after you, in a number of ways.

One of the basic things that need to be addressed when owning a pet is ensuring they receive enough attention. Both cats and dogs are affectionate creatures and like to love, and be loved. You should spend at least a couple of hours a day directly involved with your animal, even if it's just patting your cat while you watch tv. If you don't have enough time or desire to be that involved in the pet's life, then maybe you should consider fish or a mouse.

Looking after your animals appearance is also very important. Basic pet care such as grooming should be done at least once a week for dogs. With cats, they are constantly washing themselves each day so you don't need to worry as much with them. However a bath, or at least a soapy wash down, once a month will make sure their fur doesn't get dirty or matted.

Bath your dog with special shampoos that are designed specifically for them. These are formulated with special ingredients for the dogs, which look after skin conditions and fleas. Dogs with long hair should be groomed daily. Start early in their life while they are a puppy, so both they and you can get used to the routine. Make sure you reassure the animal early on, because he may get nervous during this process initially. Be gentle and don't take too long when first starting. As you go, you should also become aware of what areas of your pet likes to get groomed in. Finding their right spots can provide a lot of enjoyment to your animal.

A lot of foot injuries to dogs arise out of having long nails. So make sure you clip them regularly with special nail clippers. If you're not sure how to do it correctly, ask your local vet for advice.

Another way to care for your pets and improve their health is through Reiki. This is a process that uses holistic energy to help heal not only the body, but also mental and emotional health. It can benefit your pet by cleansing the body of toxins, speeding up the body's ability to heal, reducing stress and helping with behavioural problems.

The more you care the greater your relationship will be. Find out as much information as you can and apply that knowledge to maximise the life you give your beloved animal.
