Pick your apple this season!

There are several factors taken into consideration before planting Apple trees such as: apple variety and rootstock, site selection, proper planting, training, pruning, adequate fertility, and pest control.

The rootstock mainly determines the relative size of the tree. It does not affect the type or quality of fruit that the tree bears. Different rootstocks are desirable for various reasons. Firstly because they can control the size of the apple tree, secondly as they reduces the time the tree takes to reach its fruit-bearing age and lastly it offers some pest resistance.

While planting apple trees in the garden it is very important to remember that they do not self pollinate. For this reason only one apple tree wouldn't be able to produce much. Hence it is necessary to plant different varieties in order to ensure cross pollination.

There are several places where one can find apple trees on sale. Mail order landscapes companies offer them for sale in many sizes and types. The plants are grafted onto a rootstock and generally grown to a height of two or four feet. Another location to look out for would be several internet sites where many garden centers are offering their plants for sale to different countries and regions.

The third and possibly the best location would be at the local nurseries. At such places the plants are pre-adjusted to climatic changes and hence would bear fruits sooner. Many libraries have subscriptions to gardening magazines and newsletters which may contain catalogs or information about where to find apple trees for sale.

Apart from the standard sized ones, dwarf apple trees have many advantages. As they are smaller they occupy less space in the garden. Because of their reduced size it makes it easier to prune, spray and harvest fruit. There are two ways to create them. One is to specially breed them smaller and the other is to graft the tree onto a rootstock that has been selected for its dwarfing characteristics.

The rootstock chosen for the dwarf apple tree is preferred by gardeners more often as they are much hardier than the original root system of the tree. The small stature of the dwarf apple tree amounts to less pruning and spraying. Hence it results in lesser care and work to be involved. Not only is the selection of breed important but also its size.

A dwarf apple tree would grow better in a home garden as compared to a full size grown apple tree. It would bear fruits in a limited time of three years from the day of being planted.

Thus if you are interested in planting apple trees and are worried about limited garden space, then dwarf apple trees would be the best choice for you. Sow your seeds and reap its benefits!
