Gardening Tips: How To Grow Garlic
The right climate and soil conditions are needed for growing garlic. There are three main groups of garlic, but we will be focusing on white garlic.
Planting garlic is a long term thing. In warmer climates, garlic can be planted in early winter. These plants will be dormant for several weeks. The winter months are necessary in order to establish the roots and the shoots that will turn into buds. The side buds will turn into garlic cloves as spring sets in.
Some gardeners prefer to grow in early spring but they do face many problems with their planting like poor root growth and wet soil conditions. The plants can be grown in autumn if you're in an area that's temperatures are mild. The plants will have a root system and possibly a small growth above ground but with heavy mulching they will withstand the cold temperatures, snow and ice of the winter months. In the spring, the mulch should be removed.
The soil should be drained well and fertile. You should lime your soil on a monthly basis. Compost is necessary and needs to be well rotted to provide the most benefits or the plant. The pH should be 6.5, unless there is limestone in the soil.
Planting garlic:
Garlic is planted like all other bulb plants. The bottom is the larger end, and they are placed in the ground so they will grow upright. They should have four inch spaces between them and covered with an inch of dirt.
Growing successfully:
Garlic is a difficult plant to successfully home garden. Poor seed cloves, weather, soil, and diseases are all obstacles you must face. It is paramount to have the best drainage of the soil you use for your plants. Commercially grown garlic seeds are treated before planting which is something a home gardener cannot do. If the seeds and soil are heavily treated, gardeners in colder regions will have better luck.
Although moisture is a real problem for the garlic plants, during dry periods the ground must be kept well watered. Be sure to consult an expert to be sure you are using the correct variety for your planting. Bulbs should be in dry, ventilated places that are about 50 degrees.
