As a rule parents these days did not grow up with the any contact to computers at all yet our kids seem to have been born computer literate. Just like all of the parents before us we need to know everything we can about what our kids are doing and where they are going and that is particularly true on the Internet.

We have all heard the horrendous stories about Internet predators and we all know how insidious they can be. It is so simple to seem to be something that you are not on the Internet that it can cause a real threat to everybody but in particular children and young people.

Internet predators can be a risk to our children but unfortunately kids and young people can also be at danger from their own peers. Cyberbullying is reaching widespread proportions. There are websites out there promoting perilous lifestyles and sexting is also increasing. We need to coach our children to use common good judgment when they are on the Internet.

As a parent it is your task to be familiar with as much about the Internet as your kids do. If you are not as familiar with being online as they are then you need to learn whatever you have to so you can catch up. You are liable for defending the wellbeing of your children so you need to know where they are going and what they are doing particularly online. You can learn how to verify browsing history or how to use monitoring software so that you are an educated parent.

Email can be another concern. You may want to share an email account with your child until they attain a definite level of maturity. Most parents have rules about certain things like dating; there should be rules about email usage also. You can check incoming emails and erase offensive spam if you share an email and after your child becomes trustworthy enough to deal with it then maybe they can get their own email address.

As a parent you also need to be experienced about social networking sites. Contrary to what you kid's may tell you, it's all right for a parent to have an account at myspace, facebook, twitter and any other sites where your kids play. You need to know what goes on at those sites. Also, cyberbullying can become so destructive and so pervasive because we all, adults included, tend to waste too much time online. Teach your kids to disconnect and find a life beyond of the Internet. They can go do something else for a while and the Internet will still be there when they get back, guaranteed!

There are many Internet monitoring software programs that you can put in that will allow you to track all Internet activity, including messaging, websites visited and even chat room exchanges. You can be diplomatic about this but if you are alert you can diffuse potentially dangerous interactions before they get out of hand.

The Internet is a wonderful tool that can instruct us and help us to grow but if it is abused or not monitored it can promptly become a hazardous threat. You watched your child and you've done everything you could to keep them safe, you need to continue that attention with the Internet.
