Many parents ask when it is appropriate to begin homeschooling their child. These parents do not consider that homeschooling is in fact a natural process which parents typically begin very early indeed. Although it is not often thought of as homeschooling, a great portion of the interactions you have with your child are in fact educational in nature. When you teach your child their ABCs, you are homeschooling them. Parents homeschool their children all the time without even thinking of it. This shows us that it is never too early to begin homeschooling your child. There's a lot to homeschooling besides teaching your child on a classroom-based model; you can let your child pursue their own interests to a large extent, which will show you as the educator a way forward to teaching your child in a way that will retain their interest. All parents do this as a matter of course, but few call the process homeschooling.
Early homeschooling can be a rewarding experience. You can read books together, count things, visit museums, write stories and simply explore the world around you. Education is far more than what you can get out of a text book; it is about what you can learn about the world from your own observations and experiences within it. When you interact naturally with your child as a parent, you'll be able to get a sense of their interests and aptitudes. This is a good way to help you decide on a curriculum which will work perfectly for your child. Your child can progress largely at their own pace ? something all parents already do, but homeschooling qua homeschooling is an extension of this idea. The things you teach your child when they are still quite young can give them a foundation for their educational future, be this homeschooling or traditional classroom education. Every time you help your child to learn, even something as simple as writing a letter to their grandparents, you are helping your child build a love of knowledge and of learning which will serve them well for their entire lives. Our society has been conditioned to follow certain benchmarks such as a child starts kindergarten at five years of age or they should know how to tie their shoes by the time they are in first grade. Homeschooling is favored by many parents and child experts because it does not follow those benchmarks, it allows the child to direct their own. The milestones are met at the child's pace, not at the expectations of some child development andquot;expert.andquot; So, instead of asking when you should start homeschooling your child, you should be asking what you should do next because you have already begun!Authored by Danise B.
