The Brisbane Coast Has Activities For All



Brisbane is set in off the coast, despite the relaxed beach feel it gives off. For the beauty and serene atmosphere of Moreton bay suburbs such as Redcliffe and Manly are where you will wan to head.

Redcliffe: The site of Queenslands first European settlement in 1824, Redcliffe has grown into a thriving seaside city just 30 minutes north-east of Brisbane. The relaxed lifestyle, golden beaches and beautiful foreshore parks are just part of the attraction. The Redcliffe peninsula juts into Moreton Bay and from the top of the volcanic red cliffs there are excellent views of the islands across the bay.

There are heritage trails that you can follow, where you will enjoy the sights of historic buildings. Redcliffe beaches are great for the swimmer in everyone, and if you are more of the fishing kind you can hop onto the Redcliffe Jetty. At Pelican Park, you can enjoy kite flying on the the second and forth Sunday of each month, hosted by the Queensland Kite Flyers Society. If you are interested in looking at wildlife, Redcliffe offers tours where you can watch humpback whales migrate past the coast during the winter.

Alma Park Zoo: This zoo is set inside an award winning rainforest garden and is only 28 kilometers north of the city. You will find both exotic and native animals, and you have the opportunity to interact with animals such as koalas, kangaroos and deer. There are also animals ranging from wombats to monkeys, for your viewing pleasure. Alma Park Zoo, also has many beautiful picnic areas, where you can relax and enjoy a nice lunch with your family.

Wynnum-Manly: It is a beautiful coastal area, only 15 kilometres east of the city. While here you should stop by Pandanus Beach, as it is the largest sandy beach in the Wynnum North Mangrove Circuit. If you are in the mood for an more active activity you can walk along the shore on the boardwalk or hire a bike and ride the esplanade from Manly to Lota. At the Manly Harbour you a lot of stunning yacht and charters, as well as boats available for hire that you can go fishing or sailing on. You also have the option of taking a tour to the island of St. Helena from here, if you are interested in viewing the remains of prison structures from 1862-1932.

Wynnum-Manly's neighboring suburbs have a history dating back to the 1860s and boast some interesting historic sights. North of Wynnum, at the mouth of the Brisbane River, is the 19th century Fort Lytoon, surrounded by a moat. A museum at the fort (open only on Sundays and public holidays) interprets Queenslands military and social history from 1879. Further north is the Port of Brisbane which offers public tours and includes an informative visitor centre.
