Grandparents And The Guilt Of Christmas

Every family knows that the magic of Christmas is never more alive than when celebrated through the lives of their children. The colors, the lights, the music, and the pageants are all wonderul, but even more special when we can experience them with our children. A child can make the whole family's Christmas brighter.
Children are usually the focal points of most holiday celebrations, but even more so at large family gatherings, when relatives get to enjoy the youngest family members, often for the first time. Even so, it's more and more difficult for families to gather at Christmas than it's ever been. Extended families, today, are spread out more than ever before.
Regardless of where a family may reside, if they have children, they can count on one thing, every holiday season-Grandma and Grandpa want to see their grandchildren on Christmas. In fact, both sets of grandparents probably compete, each year, to see who can exert the most pressure and guilt, in order to bring a holiday visit, no matter how far away they may live.
One thing many grandparents fail to understand (or perhaps they just ignore it) is the fact that travel today is more expensive and difficult than it was just a few years ago. And in many young families today, both parents have careers, making holiday plans more difficult to coordinate than ever before.
It's no fun for any family to be pressured into spending time and money on travel, at Christmas, and it's even worse for families who have to travel with young children. By the time a family with tired toddlers has been through several crowded airports, and sat crammed into several planes, none of them are in a mood to enjoy the holiday.
Rather than applying the kind of guilt that only they can apply, and making Christmas difficult for their childrens' families, grandparents should consider making the holidays as easy as possible for everyone concerned. A couple without children can travel for less money and with less hassle than their children, with their own young children, can. Grandma and Grandpa can stay in a motel, too, near their grandchildren, without making anyone lose their own bedroom.
One of the best ways for grandparents to visit during the holidays is to plan the trip for before Christmas. They can send presents ahead and be there to watch their grandchildren open them. It's a great opportunity, then, for Grandma and Grandpa to travel on and have their own quiet holiday vacation, when hotel and resort prices are usually bargains.
