Setting Up a Backcountry Camp
Many of us dream about the great outdoors and think about getting away for a weekend by planning a trip into the great outdoors. There is so much to think about as you need to be sure that you are safe and enjoy this trip to the maximum. When you are picking up all your tips, tricks and best practices you will surely want to learn how to locate a backcountry camp.
Don't forget that when you set up a backcountry camp, you will be spending a lot of time there in relation to your overall length of your adventure. It goes without saying, therefore that you need to spend time to choose the best location. Have a good idea of what you are searching for before you set out in the morning as you do not want to be stressing to find somewhere as dusk sets in.
Safety is the first priority when choosing a location for your backcountry camp. You will have a number of things to consider when you're making your decision and will need time to do so. Plan your day accordingly by leaving early in the morning and giving yourself plenty of time when you get to your chosen area.
Don't just choose the first area of flat ground that you find for your backcountry camp. You must make sure that this location is safe, first and foremost from any falling objects. Look up and around you to see if there are any loose branches or danger from other falling objects which may become dislodged when you are sleeping.
It is always nice to camp close to running water for a couple of reasons. Firstly you will be able to get water to boil and to wash with and secondly the sound of running water is often soothing when it is time to sleep. However, you should make sure that you are above the floodplain as you never know when the level of the water could rise. Sudden torrential storms far upstream have been known to cause safety situations for campers even though it may not be raining where you are.
Before you set out you should have a good overall awareness about the inhabitants of the area. What kind of wild animals live there and could they be a threat to you, in particular mountain lions or bears? If you see evidence of large animals, footprints and so on then you should move on until you come to a more appropriate location for your backcountry camp.
A fire is a great friend when you are camping so when looking for an area for your backcountry camp, make sure that there is a lot of loose wood to help you set it. Be careful that you do not locate near any dense undergrowth which could catch fire and cause a serious problem rather quickly.
When you are getting ready to set out on your hiking expedition make sure that your backpack is loaded correctly and has the right amount of gear to sustain you for your trip. Most of the gear that you carry in your backpack you will need to establish your backcountry camp, so make sure it is packed well.
