First of all, if you've started out, it's always a good idea to contact a licensed river rafting agency before planning a rafting trip. You can find these quite easily, as they're often based nearby main river rafting locations. Some facilities also provide good river rafting training for novices, allowing you to learn some new skills, or refresh your old ones. Two famous river rafting locations would have to be the Chattooga, which was featured in the 1972 epic Deliverance, and if you're the other side of the globe this year, the Huka Falls is fantastic location, which was also the setting for recent comedy film Without a Paddle.

There are a range of great places to go river rafting which may be a little bit closer to home, for example, one of the most popular places to go river rafting in America has to be the American River in California. It ranges from easier rapids to the more difficult stretches that should only be tackled by experienced rafters. It's also important to know that white water rapids are each rated depending on their scale of difficulty. They are judged on a wide variety of different attributes, which include currents, water speed and the amount of rocks that are in and around the river, these all count towards the rivers overall rating.

In the past, rivers were rated on a general scale of class I for beginners and class V for more experienced rafters. However, in more recent years as rafters have become more skilled, class VI was introduced for hardcore rafters who had the ability and skill to navigate through the rapids safely. Other great places to give river rafting a go have to include the Rogue River. The Rogue River is located in Oregon, amongst the Cascade Mountain Range. The river itself has some truly breath taking views and sites, and can be a great location if you're thinking about taking the family. Be sure to be safe though and make sure you have some skill, as the rapids you may be tackling range between Class II and Class III.

Tour leaders will usually provide you with all the gear that you need when you go river rafting, but if you've decided to play it solo, it's important you know what you're letting yourself in for. You will need a lot of gear in order to be safe on the rapids. Wetsuits, paddles, lifejackets, rafts and other essentials will all be required. Pumps, throw ropes, patch kits and life jackets are also necessities, so be sure you have the capacity to carry all these things either in your car or in your trailer.Whitewater rafting can sometimes be a once in a lifetime thrill, one minute you could be experiences Class I rapids and taking in the breathtaking scenery which surrounds you, and the next minute, you could stumble into some serious Class VI rapids!
