Starting a new craft can be exciting, but it can also be expensive. You probably don't want to go out and spend a lot of money on materials since you might not even like the craft after you try the first project. What's a tentative crafter to do? Find free cross stitch patterns, either online, in books, or in magazines, to save yourself some of the expense.
Finding instructions for learning to cross stitch is as easy as going to your local public library. However, many of the books at the library may be older, and the patterns might not appeal to you. That doesn't mean that the books don't have value. They can provide the instruction you need, even if you wouldn't complete one of the projects.
Check when the books were published, older books may help you learn the techniques but any patterns included may be out of date and not suitable for modern day projects. Over time different embroidery techniques have passed in and out of fashion, generally it seems, coming back into favour after a gap of around thirty years. Although samplers from Victorian times and before included cross stitch, it has only been used in its modern form since the 1980's.
Don't forget to look at magazines to find free patterns. Both the library and the magazine section of your grocery store or discount store are likely to carry craft magazines and many are filled with free patterns. Even the newest magazines are available at the library and you can usually copy a cross stitch pattern for just a nickel or so.
If you've still not found any free cross stitch patterns that shout andquot;Stitch me?andquot; Let's try your local needlework or craft store next. Whether you find free cross stitch leaflets or not, pick up some fabric, threads and needles as there is still somewhere else you can try.
There is little doubt, however, that the best place to look for cross stitch patterns (especially the freebies) is the internet. Just search andquot;free cross stitch patternsandquot; and you will find enough patterns that more than a few are sure to make you fall in love. Even if you start your search with no idea of what you want, you can find free cross stitch patterns on the internet with just about any theme you like.
Cross stitch is a wonderful hobby, and it can be quite expensive, but it doesn't have to be. From your local library, to crafts stores, to the internet, instructions and patterns are everywhere. Find a pattern you like and take the plunge into cross stitching with one of the many free cross stitch patterns that are available to you.
